Arnica extract is extracted from the plant Arnica, a kind of Compositae, a medicinal herb distributed in North America. It contains plant essential oils. Traditionally, it is a healing herb for bruises and blood stasis. With creeping rhizomes and erect aerial stems, daisy-like chrysanthemums bloom in summer.

Arnica buds are dark yellow with yellow petals

A single plant of arnica is between 6 inches (15 cm) and 2 feet (60 cm) tall. The leaves grow in tight clusters at the base of the stem, and the flowers are yellow in color, somewhat like a daisy.

Arnica flowers and roots are available, and naturopaths use them as pain relievers, expectorants, and stimulants.

When applied topically to the skin, arnica is effective in treating wounds, bruises, and skin irritations.

Arnica can be made into a salve to relieve muscle soreness or arthritis.
