Lily mushrooms are a familiar ingredient to many and this edible mushroom stands out for its unique flavor, interesting appearance and impressive nutritional profile. Lily mushrooms have also been linked to many different mushroom nutritional benefits and are well-studied for their cancer-fighting, immune-boosting effects. So what are the benefits of lily mushroom, how should you enjoy it, and why should you consider including it in your diet? Let's take a closer look at this medicinal mushroom and some of the ways it can affect your health.
What are Lily Mushrooms?
Lily mushroom, also known as enoki mushroom, is a common fungus in Asian cuisine. Its appearance is different from other edible fungi, usually growing in clusters, with long white stipe and a small cap at the end. Not only is this mushroom versatile and easy to incorporate into your
cooking, but it's also packed with essential nutrients and provides plenty of antioxidants, fiber, and B vitamins in every serving. In many forms of traditional medicine, enoki mushrooms have also been used historically to treat stomach problems, control blood pressure levels, and promote liver health.
nutrient content
Lily mushrooms are a nutrient-dense food. That means each serving provides a variety of important vitamins and minerals with very few calories from lily mushrooms. Lily mushrooms, in particular, are a good source of fiber and B vitamins, such as niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin.
Health benefits
1. Nutritious
Lily mushrooms are low in calories but contain a long list of important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They're rich in B vitamins like niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin, all of which are essential for brain function, energy production, DNA synthesis, and more. Lily mushrooms also contain high amounts of antioxidants, which are beneficial compounds that help neutralize harmful free radicals and protect against chronic disease. Mushrooms are an especially good source of antioxidants such as quercetin, catechins, gallic acid, and caffeic acid, according to an animal study published in BioMed Research International.
2. Supports heart health
One of the most promising benefits of enoki mushrooms is its powerful effect on heart health. In fact, the animal model cited above published by BioMed Research International found that hamsters consuming enoki mushroom extract had lower levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and bad LDL cholesterol, which are risk factors for heart disease.
3. May Help Fight Cancer Cells
In vitro studies and animal models have found that enoki mushrooms can help fight the growth and development of cancer cells. In mice, for example, a specific protein in mushrooms was found to reduce the tumor activity of liver cancer cells. Likewise, another study in the journal Oncology Reports noted that enoki mushrooms effectively prevented the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro. But keep in mind that more research is needed to confirm the potential health benefits of enoki mushrooms and to understand how they may affect the development of cancer in humans.
4. High fiber
Every serving of enoki mushrooms counts when it comes to nutrition. Not only do these mushrooms bring a big dose of key vitamins and minerals to the table, but enoki mushrooms are also high in fiber, squeezing 1.8 grams into a cup. Fiber is important for several aspects of health, but especially for digestion. Studies show that eating more fiber can prevent problems like constipation, hemorrhoids, intestinal ulcers, diverticulitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
5. Enhance immune function
Some studies have found that enoki mushrooms contain a protein compound that may help boost immunity. In fact, an animal model in Taiwan actually demonstrated the immune-enhancing properties of Flammulina velutipes, noting that it effectively boosted immune function and reduced tumor growth when administered to mice.
