Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.), also known as artichoke and chrysanthemum thistle, is a perennial herb of Compositae. The artichoke got its name because the Japanese passed through Korea when it was introduced to Korea from China, so it was mistakenly called artichoke, and it is still used today. 1. Treat indigestion

In Europe, artichokes have long been used as a herbal remedy for indigestion. Artichoke extract is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, including digestive disorders such as abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea.

2. Lowering blood fat and anti-atherosclerosis

Many experiments have shown that artichoke extract can reduce blood lipids, mainly by affecting the synthesis and decomposition pathways of cholesterol and lipids in the liver to regulate blood lipid levels, thereby preventing the occurrence of atherosclerosis.

3. Liver protection and antioxidant function

Research on the antioxidant function of artichokes has mainly focused on leaf extracts. It was found that the antioxidant capacity of polyphenolic compounds isolated and extracted from artichoke mainly depends on the number of hydroxyl groups on the aromatic ring. In addition, the second hydroxyl group located at the ortho and para positions can also increase its antioxidant capacity. The test results showed that the EC50 values of 1 g artichoke extract on DPPH and FRAP were equivalent to 29.2 mg and 62.6 mg VC, 77.9 mg and 159 mg VE, respectively, and had a good anti-LDL oxidation effect.

The results of the antioxidant test of rat hepatocytes in vitro showed that 0.001 mg/ml of the aqueous phase extract could reduce the content of MDA, and did not affect the level of glutathione (GSH) in hepatocytes, on the contrary, it reduced the loss of GSH and the loss of GSSG loss. Visible artichoke extract has a strong antioxidant effect. Therefore, it is speculated that the antioxidant effect of the extract is the main reason for its hepatoprotective and liver regeneration promoting effects.

The antimicrobial activities of chlorogenic acid, cynic acid, luteolin-7-rutinoside and stenoside in artichoke are relatively high, and the antifungal activity is stronger than the antibacterial activity.

5. Other values

Artichoke leaf extract, especially its flavonoids can regulate the gene expression of NO enzyme in human epithelial cells, promote the synthesis of NO, and thus prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Artichokes contain glycosides that have antispasmodic properties. In addition, artichoke can also improve intestinal peristalsis, promote the contraction of the intestinal wall, so that the substances in the intestine can be transported faster, thereby preventing constipation.
